Frenectomy

A frenectomy is a simple surgical procedure to remove or reposition a frenulum, a thin tissue connecting the upper lip to the gum or the tongue to the floor of the mouth. There are two types of frenectomies:

1. Labial frenectomy: Removes the frenulum between the upper lip and gum, often performed for orthodontic purposes or to improve the appearance of a gummy smile.
2. Lingual frenectomy (also known as a tongue-tie release): Releases the frenulum under the tongue, often performed to improve speech, eating, or breastfeeding difficulties in infants and children.

The procedure is usually done under local anesthesia, and recovery is quick. Frenectomies can help:

– Improve oral function
– Enhance speech clarity
– Facilitate breastfeeding
– Support orthodontic treatment
– Boost confidence in one’s smile
